See the community as a navigable tree

Individual names can be clear while the whole server remains confusing. This discord community channel layout generator drafts a grouped tree from community model, audience size band, onboarding intensity, activity zones, and staff visibility. The result shows categories and children together, explains each route, and asks what can be pruned.

This is not a server importer or bot. It reads no channels, roles, members, permissions, applications, or activity. It cannot create, reorder, or delete anything. The deterministic browser model outputs a proposed information architecture for human review.

Start with member journeys

An interest group usually needs orientation, recurring conversation, and maintained resources. A project collective needs work areas, decisions, and delivery or archive paths. A learning cohort benefits from curriculum, focus, questions, and progress. An event community emphasizes arrival, schedule, live help, and recap. A creator community separates published updates from member participation.

Audience size band changes breadth, not importance. Small favors fewer multi-purpose routes. Growing introduces clearer handoffs where repeated traffic justifies them. Large may propose additional moderation and archive boundaries. The tool does not know member count or predict scale; the labels Small, Growing, and Large are planning postures.

Activity zones are explicit jobs. Choosing Conversation, Resources, Projects, Events, and Support does not force five categories. The layout engine groups compatible jobs and rejects duplicate children. Every group receives a pruning question so reviewers must defend its existence.

Worked example: a growing project collective

A volunteer software collective currently has twenty top-level channels. New contributors cannot find project decisions, and support questions interrupt planning. The organizer chooses Project collective, Growing, Guided onboarding, Conversation, Resources, Projects, and Support, with a Separate operations group.

The draft tree begins with START HERE containing orientation, community-guidelines, and choose-a-project. PROJECT WORK contains project-updates, decision-notes, and work-questions. RESOURCES contains contributor-guides and tool-reference. HELP contains contributor-help. OPERATIONS is proposed separately with an explicit permission review.

Route rationale explains that decision notes are durable records, while work questions are conversational. Onboarding dependency asks who maintains the project list. The pruning prompt challenges whether tool-reference has an owner. The collective merges two old chat rooms, assigns owners, and tests the member view before making any change.

Treat onboarding as a dependency graph

One-step onboarding proposes one orientation entry and a visible first destination. Guided adds a small sequence such as orientation, rules, interest or project choice, then participation. Application-based introduces a handoff and reveals a Private-data warning acknowledged checkbox, unchecked by default, because applications may contain personal information. The page blocks that draft until the warning is acknowledged, then shows the confirmation as a current-page planning state rather than proof that collection, retention, or permissions are safe.

The generator does not configure Discord Community Onboarding or Server Guide. Official support documentation describes those current features as reviewed August 29, 2026. The output may help plan content used around them, but a live administrator must configure eligibility, questions, default channels, resources, and permissions.

If one step points to a route that does not exist or is hidden from the intended member, the journey breaks. Trace the proposed tree using a test member view. Do not assume category order or a descriptive label grants access.

Separate member navigation from operations

No staff group proposed is appropriate when operations happen elsewhere or do not need a dedicated area. Separate operations group suggests a clear internal boundary. Operations plus review queue adds a handoff for moderation or applications, but it never creates privacy.

The permission-boundary result lists questions about audience, posting rights, inherited settings, bots, and sensitive records. Discord’s official Channel Categories article explains that children may have synced or non-synced permissions. Review every effective setting. A category name such as OPERATIONS is not a control.

Avoid copying private incident summaries, applicant data, or member identities into this tool. If the community handles sensitive reports, use an appropriately reviewed case process rather than a generic channel-tree suggestion.

Prune by job, ownership, and activity

For each proposed group, ask whether members perform a distinct action there, whether someone owns it, and how inactivity is handled. A blank category creates cognitive load even if its name is clear. A resource lane without maintenance becomes misleading. A support route without coverage creates a false promise.

The tool cannot inspect traffic, duplication, message history, permissions, channel type, threads, forums, or media features. Its layout is a hypothesis. Pilot the smallest viable map, observe questions and misposts, then revise.

Layout questions

Will the tool import my existing channels?

No. It requests no server or channel-list access.

Are the size bands member-count thresholds?

No. They are editorial planning postures, not measured thresholds.

Does the tree include private permissions?

It includes review prompts only. All access must be verified in Discord.

Can I copy the whole tree?

Yes, after a user click, but Copy only places plain text on the clipboard and creates nothing.

## Draft, prune, and test

Choose the community model and essential activity zones, then press Draft a community channel tree. Remove unsupported groups, assign owners, trace onboarding, inspect permissions and current features, and implement the smallest defensible structure manually.
